IWC unveils a luxury watch inspired by the G-Class at a price 7 times lower than the Mercedes SUV

Swiss manufacturer IWC expands its collection of Big Pilot’s watches with a dual creation inspired by a luxury car, the Mercedes G-Class.

The new luxury watch, the Big Pilot AMG G 63, is an ambitious project that IWC has meticulously designed. This year, the Swiss watchmaker is celebrating its 20th year of collaboration with the German automobile manufacturer Mercedes. To mark this anniversary, a Grande Montre d’Aviateur AMG G 63 model, available in two versions, was created. The first is a watch with an imposing case (46.2 mm, 14.5 mm thick) and an 18-carat Armor Gold crown, featuring a black rubber strap with microfiber insert. Why this combination of black and gold? To pay homage to the recent exterior paint and interior finish of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 “Grand Edition.”

The second watch celebrating the 20-year Swiss-German partnership is a first for IWC: the case, still 46.2 mm in size, is made of Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC), developed in close collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLR). A rarity indeed, and quite a beauty, one must admit, with a finish achieved using diamond tools. The strap is also matte black rubber with a microfiber insert.

Both new Big Pilots feature black dials with an embossed appearance. This meticulous texture recalls the structure and aerodynamics of Mercedes AMG performance models.

Technically, the mechanism of both Big Pilot’s AMG G 63 models combines modern and highly precise horological innovations. Equipped with IWC’s top-of-the-line 52010 movement.

The movement of the watches can be observed through the tinted sapphire glass case back, with the brand Mercedes-Benz’s star logo prominently featured at the center.

These two new IWC-Mercedes offerings are available at $40,000 for the Big Pilot AMG 63 in “Grand Edition” gold and $52,000 for the Big Pilot AMG 63 in ceramic. It’s not inexpensive, to be sure, but it’s still much less expensive than the Mercedes-AMG G 63 “Grand Edition” car, which is priced at $250,000.
